Cinema Eye Honors has announced the nominations for its 11th annual awards. The nominations for the best documentaries of 2017 came out late last night with Matthew Heineman’s City of Ghosts leading the pack of strong and worthy contenders with five nominations including Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Feature Filmmaking. Coming next with four nominations each were Brimstone & Glory, Faces Places, Quest, and Strong Island. On the Canadian front, Let There Be Light is the lone nomination for the maple leaf with an acknowledgement in the category for graphics and animation, while a particularly competitive group competes for the Audience Choice including Faces Places, Kedi and Step.

The Cinema Eye Honors advocate for, recognize and promote the highest commitment to rigor and artistry in the nonfiction field. Nominations emphasize the artistic merit and craft of non-fiction filmmaking and encourage the film community to move the conservation beyond the “importance” or subject matter of a documentary. The contenders are determined by representatives from top festivals. Winners will be announced January 11, 2018 in a ceremony hosted by Steve James.
