More encouraging signs of documentaries moving forward emerged today with Telefilm Canada’s announcement of support for fifteen documentaries through the Theatrical Documentary Program. The films, over half of which are directed by women, represent five provinces and a range of emerging talents and seasoned masters. The list also includes projects in varying ranges of development with Suzanne Crocker’s First We Eat, which was recently announced as a 2020 Hot Docs selection, offering one of the docs that audiences can (presumably) see soon.
Other projects in the announcement include new films from Jennifer Baichwal (Anthropocene), Yung Chang (This Is Not a Movie) Brian Johnson (Al Purdy Was Here), Nadine Pequeneza (The Invisible Heart), Jay Cheel (How to Build a Time Machine), Jennifer Holness (producer of Hot Docs 2020 selection Stateless), and Mathieu Roy (Surviving Progress). The combined support from Telefilm Canada totals an investment of $2.1 million for Canadian documentary
