10 Short Docs Advance in Oscar Race
By Pat Mullen
Ten short documentaries have advanced in the race for Best Documentary, Short Subject at the Academy Awards. The list was unveiled yesterday by the Academy. The list of ten was whittled down from a total of 77 eligible titles. As per Academy procedures, only members of the documentary branch voted on the shortlist and will do the same to determine the five final nominees.
Among the frontrunners is festival favourite Edith + Eddie, a touching story of the oldest interracial couple struggling to wed in the United States. The film has a impressive and aggressive campaign for a short film and includes Oscar winner Cher among its backers. The film competes alongside three New York Times Op-Docs — Sundance winner Alone, 116 Cameras, and Ten Meter Tower. The Op-Docs have had considerable success on the shortlists and nomination front. They’ll contend with late-breaking HBO doc Traffic Stop, which recently won best short at DOC NYC, and Heroin(e) from defending champ Netflix. The shorts docs are often the most elusive Oscar hopefuls to see outside the festival circuit, but luckily, we’ve tracked down for your viewing pleasure. Happy Oscar watching!
